In the beginning we published a spiral bound print directory - hundreds of pages of journalists' contacts. Getting it ready for print was back breaking and quite unnatural. There is something odd about contacts being perfectly correct for the print deadline and out of date every other day of the year. After a year I realised a printed book was a particularly rubbish way to stay in touch with the fast pace of change in the media environment. That’s when MediaHQ was created as an online resource and press release distribution tool and everything became easier. What does success look like if you’re using MediaHQ? There are four key jobs:

As the new year approaches we always try to find new and interesting ways to help our users to get even better results and more media coverage.

MediaHQ Discover - Revolutionising Contact Discovery:
Like all good innovations MediaHQ was borne out of frustration. In 2021 I created a simple concept called the story circle to explain how we all communicate. It's a simple flow that describes what happens a million times every day on in-house teams and in PR agencies. We build target audiences, we create stories, we share the stories, then we analyse what happened, we calibrate for success and we do it all over again.
I soon realised that MediahQ is very good at helping people find audiences, hone and share stories, but had no way of connecting any coverage or success into the MediaHQ software. I wondered how we could make it easier - less jobs, less grunt work and unnecessary tools and more time saved.
MediaHQ Discover was born. It’s a Chrome browser extension that allows you to easily find the contact details of any journalist from any story online. Imagine you find an article that is covering your story and you don't know the journalist and would like to add them to a media list. You press the button on your Chrome Browser and it will find the contact in MediaHQ - a model will pop out and allow you to see the journalist’s profile, add them to a list or create a new list, see your contact history with them or even send them a message directly. Neat, tidy and tying the story together.
