Ireland, notorious for sports and culture is also home to some very talented sports journalists. Famous for our vicious yet tactile GAA and our hunger for rugby it seems quite unnecessary to let these journalists go unnoticed.

Here at MediaHQ, we have made a list of sports journalists we found to be worthy of recognition.

Eamon Dunphy 

Eamon Dunphy, as a former professional footballer is no stranger to the sports world. After Eamon resigned from football he started his career as a football analyst during the Premier League, Champions League and international football games on RTÉ. Following his career with RTÉ and TV3 Dunphy then became a sports columnist for The Irish Daily Star.

 Des Cahill

Des Cahill is an Irish sports commentator and presenter for RTÉ. Mainly focusing on GAA games Cahill studied journalism in Rathmines then worked in The Irish Press group before expanding to Ireland’s most leading regional newspapers The Kerryman and The Carlow Nationalist. Cahill was named ‘Ireland’s most influential Journalist on Twitter’ from the year 2015 to 2016.

Mary White

Mary White has been described as one of Ireland’s leading sports journalists in the country. As a sub-editor and a sports journalist White has a way with words as she brilliantly told the triumphant story of Cork ladies football. What makes White so unique is the fact she is a well-known advocator and promoter for ladies sport

 Derek Ryan

Derek began his career as a reporter for AA Roadwatch and Today FM before moving to Dublin’s Q102 to work as a news reader. Ryan is now a sports reporter and contributor for Virgin Media Television, RTÉ and Newstalk. Along with these roles Ryan also has a list of freelance roles dedicated to sports reporting including producer and researcher.

Claire O’Callaghan

 As well as a sports journalists Claire O’Callaghan is also a TV and Radio presenter for Dublin’s iRadio. Claire was named the winner of The Journalism Diversity Fund bursary in 2008 and is now working with RTÉ on shows such as Four Live and The Daily Show.
