On Sunday, September 10th at 6.30pm, CANNONBALL came back to Kilkenny with the support of Kilkenny County Council and the OPW. Top mark cars including McLaren, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche, Masseratti, Rolls Royce and Bentley went throught the final finish line for the event in Kilkenny this year for the first time since 2012. The atmosphere was electric as over 20,000 people came into Kilkenny from all over the country to see the show.
This year, for the first time, the supercar spectacle was preceded by some great free family fun and children’s entertainment with Transformer Robots Bumblebee, Batman and Robot Ted from Audionetworks along with Optimus Prime in ‘vehicle mode’, The Hone Energy Transformer Truck and much more. Now in its ninth year, CANNONBALL has raised almost €900,000 for Irish Charities and this year, proceeds go to Make-a-Wish Ireland, a children's charity that grants magical wishes to children between the ages of 3 - 17 years with life-threatening medical conditions.
The gleaming convoy of 190 supercars and novelty cars worth an estimated €32million drove through over 1000 kilometres of Irish open roads. 40% of Cannonball entries come from outside of Ireland and this year an exciting team with 10 supercars are coming in from Dubai.
Spectators got up close and personal with 190 of the finest cars on the planet and enjoyed the unique festival atmosphere that Cannonball is renowned for. The Cannonball Official Grid Girls and Brazillian Dancers set temperatures soaring and the Monster Truck had fire breaters and some great tunes to get the party started and some great free giveaways. Doc and Marty McFly were Back to the Future this year in the fully kitted out Delorean and the notorious NYPD, German Polizei, Fr Willie and colourful Cannonballers in crazy costumes add to the melee. CANNONBALL has always had a star-studded celebrity following including former Miss World Rosanna Davison and husband Wes Quirke, Models Emma Quinlan, Holly Carpenter, Roz Purcell and many more. BRUNO MARS even showed up one year to join Shane Lynch for a quick pit stop in Cork! Ryan Tubridy, Eoghan McDermott, Glenda Gilson, Nicky Byrne, Soap Stars Ryan and Adam Thomas, Miriam O Callaghan, An Taoiseach and Former President Mary Robinson have all dropped the famous chequered flag and this year it was the team from 2FM's Breakfast Republic Jennifer Zamparelli, Bernard O'Shea and Keith Walsh that did the honours!
The line up from headline entertainment sponsor Audionetworks and AMA Music Agency on the event was the most exciting yet with a whole hist of household names. Christy Dignam from Aslan was in Dublins, Paddy Casey played the outdoor stage in Claremorris. Cannonballers enjoyed a special intimate performance by The Four of Us in Sligo along with Daft Punk and a high energy Drum Show developed by Audionetworks.ie with Big killer tunes and incredible visuals featuring Wayne Sheehy former drummer with Rolling Stones Guitarist Ronnie Wood. Limited edition Cannonball branded clothing was in high demand all weekend and still available from Stitchmagic. With massive digital screens and rocking tunes at the finish line, this year was definitely one for the spectators.
CANNONBALL is the brainchild of Kildare Businessman and AB Signs proprietor, Alan Bannon and the benefit to the Irish economy of this event is estimated at €2,567,000 per year. With 2 National Awards and 4 nominations this year, this Supercar event shows no signs of slowing down and is now gearing up for the US in October and Japan in 2019.
