Vogue Williams Volunteers for Syria

March 20, 2017, 18:27

TV Presenter and DJ, Vogue Williams took time out to volunteer at the Irish Red Cross over the weekend as the charity prepares for its headline fundraising event of 2017, the Jasmine Ball for Syria. Vogue joined a small team of volunteers and staff at the charity's head office in Dublin preparing Red Cross kits to distribute to Syrian migrants and refugees.

Since conflict broke out in the country in 2011, the Irish Red Cross has been helping people in Syria impacted by the ongoing conflict, as well as families who have fled across borders to neighbouring countries. Each month, the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement distributes relief to more than 4.5 million people million people, including thousands in besieged areas like Madaya and Daraya.

With the support of Irish donors, the Irish Red Cross was able to fund and deliver a new and fully equipped ambulance for the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) for evacuating and treating those who are injured, sick or frail. Volunteers on the ground in Syria have reported an increase in the number of chronically ill are not receiving the necessary treatment and a drop in vaccination rates for children.  This presents a risk of the potential re-emergence of certain diseases and permanent disability for tens of thousands.

Vogue, who was home to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with her friends and family, was motivated to get involved after seeing volunteers chatting about the Jasmine Ball on social media. "I actually saw a tweet from a friend who is involved in organising the ball and wanted to do my bit for Syria whilst I’m in town. I'm grateful to be in a position where I can help out", said Vogue.  The Red Cross kits that Vogue and her volunteer colleagues prepared contained essential hygiene products, as well as toys for the younger migrants. The kits will be distributed to Syrian migrants arriving in Ireland this month.

The Jasmine Ball will take place on Saturday 6th May in the Clayton Hotel, Dublin. The event is being organised on behalf of the Irish Red Cross by leading members of Ireland’s business world who have volunteered their time and expertise.  Proceeds from the event and the Irish Red Cross Jasmine Fund will go directly to helping children and families in Syria. Donations can be made directly to the Jasmine Fund online at www.redcross.ie/donate.
