Why should you listen to this episode?
In an ever-changing media landscape, it’s essential to understand journalism models that are profitable today.
This episode of Vox Media is all about the journalism phenomenon that is Politico. Its co-founder John Harris (pictured below) gives a fascinating insight into one of the most successful ‘new media’ business models.
Started in January 2007, Politico covers politics and policy in the United States and internationally. It operates on a subscription model for people who want deep insights.
It distributes content through its website, television, printed newspapers, radio and podcasts. Its coverage in Washington, D.C. includes the U.S. Congress, lobbying, the media and the presidency.
Some of the things that he says:
“We are a subscription model for about I think roughly 60% of our revenue and 40%, still a good bit, coming from advertising.”
“We’ve got a consumer business, which is anybody who’s interested in politics and Government coming to our site. We don’t have a paywall there, and we’re not likely to. That’s advertising supported.”
“Our subscription business is for people who have a professional interest in this. The average person wouldn’t pay a couple of thousand or many thousand for really intensive policy coverage. That’s our professional business.”
“There are about 300,000 people who seem addicted to us, who come in several times a day. There are about 500,000 people who really have the bug bad for this stuff and really have an intimate relationship with us.”
