Happy International Women’s Day!
International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity, with 2019’s theme being #BalanceForBetter.
In honour of International Women’s Day, we wanted to acknowledge women who are moving mountains in their industries and inspiring women and young girls to be bold and unstoppable.
Orla O’Connor is the Director of the National Women’s Council of Ireland, the leading national women’s membership organisation in Ireland, with over 180 member groups.
Holding an MA in European Social Policy, Orla has worked in non-governmental organisations for over 25 years. She is an accomplished public speaker and has led numerous high level, successful campaigns on a wide range of issues on women’s rights, including social welfare reform, pension reform and for the introduction of quality and affordable childcare as well as the recent 8th amendment campaign.

Marie O’Riordan is the Senior Public Relations and Communications Manager at Fintech company, Prepaid Financial Services Limited.
Marie is a former Chief Management Consultant and two-time Chief Communications Officer (CCO) who has addressed audiences on Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Media and Success Psychology across the world from Dubai to Dubrovnik.
Marie has also spent over 15 years working full-time in media as a Broadcast News Journalist, Presenter and Senior Producer.
Volunteering and philanthropy have also played a major role in her life. Marie has embarked on humanitarian missions around the world and in 2011 she was presented with an International Honorary Award for her philanthropic educational work.
Marie is also a member of the Public Relations & Communications Association (PRCA) and a member of the Academy of Marketing in the UK, as well as a member of the New Media Professionals Association (NMPA) within the New York-based New Media Institute (NMI). She is also a former staff member of The National Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Lisa McGee is the mastermind behind the hit show Derry Girls. A Derry born stage and screenwriter, McGee studied Drama at Queen’s University Belfast.
Her plays include Jump, The Heights, and Nineteen Ninety Two. McGee also won the Stewart Parker Trust New Playwright Bursary for her play Girls and Dolls in 2007. The play is now set for a revival, taking place in The Gaiety in September. The show is set in Derry and features two female protagonists however the tone is very different to that of Derry Girls.
Lisa has written extensively for TV, creating the RTÉ drama Raw before moving to London to work on the BBC vampire drama Being Human. She also created her own show, London Irish, for Channel 4.
Season One of Derry Girls aired in January 2018 on Channel 4 and was deemed so successful that Netflix added it to their international offerings. With the first episode of Season Two aired this week to an audience of 1.8 million people, it’s safe to say that McGee’s wit and storytelling abilities have continued to resonate with the audience.

Samantha Barry is the current Editor-in-Chief of the Condé Nast magazine, Glamour. A native of Ballincollig, Co.Cork, Barry holds a BA in English and Psychology from University College Cork as well as an MA in Journalism from Dublin City University.
Samantha has worked as a reporter and journalist for RTÉ, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Newstalk, the BBC and CNN, as an executive producer for CNN Worldwide.
Having pulled the regular print edition of the magazine in January of this year after 80 years in print, Glamour’s digital audience has grown since Samantha took the helm. The magazine’s monthly unique viewers have risen by over 12 per cent to 6.3 million, as well as an increase in audience numbers across all digital platforms.
