Cooling off in aid of Motor Neurone

18.08.14

The newest craze sweeping the world known as the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’, is raising much needed funds for Motor Neurone.

A whole host of celebrities have joined in on the campaign which involves dumping a bucket of ice cold water over the person’s head. The shivering victim must then nominate someone of his choice to do the same. If you decide to opt out of the challenge, plan B is to donate a 100 euro/dollars to the Motor Neurone charity of your choice. This is what the President of the United States of America, Barrack Obama decided to do.

The challenge was originally the idea of Massachusetts resident Pete Frates, 29, a former college athlete who has been living with the disease for the last two years. Celebrities such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Justin Timberlake and Mark Zuckerberg have all dosed themselves in water and the cycle looks set to roll on with the likes of Niall Horan, Beyoncé and even An Taioseach, Enda Kenny nominated to get invloved.

Since the craze, Motor Neurone disease (MND) also referred to as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease, have seen donations to the various associations rocketed to €13.3m compared to €1.7 last year. The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) is inviting everyone to undertake the #icebucketchallenge to support their work in providing support to people here with MND. If you prefer to donate, text MND to donate €2 to 50300. 100% of the text goes to IMNDA.
