Mr Justice John Hedigan today ruled against any injunctions to be granted to The Irish Times which would deny The Times of London the use of “The Times Irish Edition” in their online publication.
The ruling comes after The Irish Times claimed that their trademark would become “blurred and diluted” if the publication were allowed to go ahead with the title.
Editor of The Irish Edition of The Times, Richard Oakley has said, “We are delighted that we have been successful in resisting The Irish Times’ application for an injunction to prevent us launching an Irish edition of The Times.
Our new daily digital edition of The Times for the Irish market will be a national newspaper with a global outlook and exclusive sports highlight packages produced by a team of up to 30 Irish journalists based in Dublin.”
The online publication will be launched as a 7-day digital newspaper of The Times and The Sunday Times, focusing of course on the Irish market.
Oakley went on further to say that, “There is a clear gap in the Irish market for an exciting and innovative digital newspaper and we look forward to launching in the coming weeks.”
More importantly we are very proud to be the first title to invest at this level in the Monday–Saturday Irish market in recent years.”
A decision for costs of the three-day application has been adjourned to Wednesday.
