Being a solid PR pro is no easy feat. Those that are truly talented have cultivated specific traits that set them apart from the ‘average Joe.’ It then goes without saying that to be successful in the world of modern PR, there are certain essential traits that one must possess to capitalise on opportunities, maintain a positive image and build strategy.

There are loads of must–have qualities for a PR pro, but we have whittled the list down to these top five;

  1. Thick–skinned

This is definitely not a profession for the timid or faint hearted. Solid PR pros need to develop the ability to withstand personal and brand criticism, and not be easily offended. PR people get shot-down often. It’s a common occurrence and there’s nothing wrong with that.

While solid PR pros enjoy much strategic and tactical success when working with clients, they also get shot-down presenting ideas for new campaigns or programs. This is part of the business, and you need to roll with the circumstance. Critique and criticism are common, and it is something that needs to be embraced and learned from to survive happily in the PR industry.

  1. Attention to detail

Proof read … proof read again … and then proof read one last time.  Attention to detail, especially when it comes to grammar, is of prime importance in the PR industry. In order to be taken seriously as a PR pro, you absolutely cannot publish anything with spelling or grammatical errors. Also, when collecting information for a campaign, take meticulous notes and keep them organised so that you may refer back to them while you develop your PR campaign.

  1. Honesty

Complete honesty is first and foremost when it comes to good PR. You cannot lie. Well, you can, but you won’t get far and your reputation will soon be well known but not in good way. Spinning the truth and saying a product feature exists when it doesn’t (even when you will have it next year) is the first step onto a muddy slippery slope.

  1. Bold

Great PR pros are confident go-getters willing to do anything in the name of creating a marketable and interesting story. To be a solid PR pro, you have to take calculated risks in order to launch the organisation you represent into greatness.

  1. Informed

If you’re not informed of what is going on, how will you keep your clients and the media informed? A key to finding success in public relations is knowing your client, your company, the industry and the media like the back of your hand.  Exceptional PR pros are always keeping an ear out and actively searching for new stories and relevant news, not to mention they are tapped into what consumers want to hear to help drive client coverage.
